Junior’s story:

A few days after Junior gave birth to her first child, her mother gave birth as well. The newborn was Junior’s baby sister, conceived through sexual assault by her mother’s pastor, who denied paternity.

Just days after giving birth, Junior’s mother died. Junior was suddenly left with two newborns—her own daughter and her infant sister—and a husband who gave her an impossible ultimatum: abandon her mother’s “illegitimate” child, or he would abandon them all.

Junior chose the girls.

She left and came to Mwana.

Time and time again, Mwana becomes family when it is needed most. We provided Junior with a home and a job, giving her the stability to raise both girls and to pour into them the same fierce, sacrificial spirit that carried her through.
