the commission process

Commissioning a custom artwork allows the client to have a unique and individualized piece of fine art to meet the design needs while reflecting personal significance. Wellon works alongside the client (or designer) to understand the specific needs for the artwork. The following should be clearly articulated:

composition

Composition refers to the overall subject and design of the painting. This is the “what it is” aspect of the piece. Clients can reference artist materials (Instagram, website, etc.) for examples of compositions or can bring other references such as photos.

Composition generally falls into one of three categories: Landscape (or “landstract” meaning a loose, abstract interpretation of landscape), Abstract (color and texture as focus), or Figurative (ex: horse, heron, person). Clients are not limited to replicating a past painting (each piece is unique!) but should clearly communicate what aspects of reference paintings they wish to incorporate (ex: a straight horizon line with tall, more linear trees)

color scheme

Clients can reference artist materials for color schemes they would like incorporated, such as paint colors, fabric samples, etc. Keep in mind that colors are quite subjective, so what a client may describe as “blue” may be interpreted broadly. It is helpful to be as specific as possible and referencing particular images of artwork, swatches or fabrics in describing color. Since colors are dynamic and change with surrounding wall color and the amount and quality of light (i.e. direct sunlight, indirect light such as through lamps), it is helpful to communicate where the piece will be hanging.

significance + details

Sometimes clients wish to incorporate a personal significance to the artwork that can be represented symbolically. Clients have requested things such as a scripture passage or poem written underneath the painting, a special title, an artistic interpretation of a special place, etc. The artist can work with the client to reflect this significance in a unique and personal way.

Does the client love drips? Hates splatters? Wants some metallic included somewhere? Any particular details should be noted as well.
